Understanding Lightweight Adhesive Properties

When searching for a lightweight adhesive, there are many different types available for the job. However, it’s important to understand their properties to ensure the right one is chosen.

For example, there are various physical properties to consider. These include an adhesive’s level of:

  • Cohesive strength
  • Flexibility
  • Damping capability
  • Temperature resistance

However, it’s also important to consider the chemical properties within an adhesive’s formulation.

  • Kinetics: When needing a lightweight adhesive, the adhesive’s mix of kinetics is a main determining factor in its capabilities. This property takes into account cure temperature and time.
  • Plasticity: The level of plasticity for a lightweight adhesive determines how it will undergo deformation under pressure. Choosing an adhesive that withstand an application’s level of deformation is important.

Furthermore, it’s important to test a lightweight adhesive to see how it works with the rest of the assembly process.

For example, substrates’ thermal expansion properties need to be considered. This is because different thermal expansion rates during an assembly process may lead to destructive mechanical loads.

Application and cure times must also be taken into account when testing a lightweight adhesive’s performance in the assembly process. Doing so will enable it to perform at an optimum level within the entire structure.
