Best Practices for Automotive Air Filtration Assembly

As demand for automotive air filters rises, due in large part to increased consumer purchasing power and environmental concerns, it important for manufacturers to understand best practices for faster and better filter assembly.

Best Practices for Air Filter Frame Bonding

Frame bonding plays an important role in determining the automotive air filter’s overall performance. For example, filter frames prevent air leaks and create a single path for dirtied air to travel. However, frame materials are becoming lighter, made out of:

  • Nylon or glass-filled nylon
  • PET or polypropylene
  • ABS

As a result, bonding the frame together has become more difficult. To ensure proper frame bonding performance, use an adhesive that is compatible with light weight materials and will not bleed through.

Best Practices for Air Filter Gasketing

When gasketing automotive air filters, use adhesives to replace cut rubber gaskets. Foamed to each filter’s specification, they ensure ideal performance and increased durability. These adhesives can be:

  • Polyurethane: hot melt and two-part
  • Block copolymer
  • Silicone

They also can be thermoplastic or thermoset to meet specific end-use application requirements.

Best Practices for Air Filter End Cap Bonding

End caps are crucial in holding a filter together while keeping the filter’s pleats open. For this application, using automotive air filter adhesives that offer high temperature and chemical resistance is key. In particular, ensure the adhesive can maintain performance even in 250-400°F. It also should be able to resist:

  • Motor, hydraulic and transmission oil
  • Alcohol, acetone and other organic solvents
  • Natural gas, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide
