Adhesives in the Electronics Assembly Market

According to Markets and Markets, the electronics adhesives market is expected to be worth $6,085.4 million by 2020. Factors driving this growth include the use of thinner substrates, the need for increased production efficiencies, the expansion of the electronics sector and the use of easily damaged components.

Below are items to consider when opting for adhesives in electronics assembly:

Types of Adhesives:

Non-Electrically Conductive: Typically, most adhesives are not electrically conductive and must be converted by adding a filler to the base material. Often, this filler is silver, which then enables the electric current throughout the product to be possible.

Adhesives that need a filler to convert them into being electronically conductive are:

  • Epoxies
  • Cyanoacrylates (“super glues”)
  • Silicones
  • Urethane acrylates

Electrically Conductive: The two types of electronically conductive adhesives are isotropic and anisotropic. Differences between the two are as follows:

  • Isotropic adhesives:
    • Conduct electricity vertically only and are uni-directional
    • Lend themselves well to fine-line interconnection
  • Anisotropic adhesives:
    • Conduct electricity in all directions

While electrically conductive adhesives are automatically conductive and do not need a filler, they have certain limitations. For example, they are not good with tin or aluminum and do not function well when exposed to damp or wet conditions in service.

How Adhesives Help Electronics:

As cited in Technology Watch, the use of adhesives in electronics assembly is now widespread. These adhesives contribute not only to the manufacturing process but also to electronics’ long-term operation and longevity.

Major uses for adhesives in electronics include:

  • Bonding surface-mount components (SMCs)
  • Wire tacking and potting
  • Encapsulating components
