4 Considerations to Make When Choosing Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSAs)

Valued at $7.87 billion, pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are a popular type of bonding method for many applications. With rising use in the packaging, automotive and electronics markets especially, it’s important that manufacturers fully understand the following performance properties to ensure the correct PSA is chosen for a given application.

  1. Level of Bleed-Through

PSAs have varying levels of bleed-through. This means that a given PSA may migrate into the face material, resulting in a product’s tainted appearance as well as performance issues. Ensure the chosen PSA is compatible with the face stock.

  1. Degree of Exposure

PSAs can withstand varying degrees of:

  • UV
  • Solvents
  • Weathering
  • Moisture
  • Temperature

Fully understanding the end-use application with help in choosing a PSA that will not fail when exposed to certain conditions. To aid in this, it’s important to conduct sufficient testing and learn their environmental performance levels. For example:

  • Not all acrylic PSAs exhibit the same sensitivity to UV and aging.
  • Silicone PSAs are generally the best at handling exposure to solvents.
  • Water-borne PSAs have less moisture resistance levels than other PSAs.
  1. The R’s

It’s also a good idea to consider a PSAs level of removability and repositionality, particularly if the application requires moving a part shortly after assembly or at any time. Some PSAs are permanent and cannot be removed.

Furthermore, given today’s pressures for sustainability, consider whether the PSA is recyclable and repulable.

  1. Surface Texture

The surface texture plays a large role in understanding how well an adhesive will bond to it. With PSAs especially, the intimate contact of the adhesive molecules with the surface molecules can greatly impact performance.

For example, the level of roughness impacts how well an adhesive can wet out the surface. Ensure compatible adhesive properties and substrate properties are chosen.
